Mecca Bingo have been awarded a £59 million VAT refund by the high court in the UK. It comes as a great relief to Rank Group Plc who have been fighting for this for over a year. It has been reported that Mecca bingo overpaid their taxes between the years 2003 and 2008 and this substantial VAT refund amount couldn’t have come at a better time what with the recession facing the country. There was an additional claim by Rank for another £26 million in overpaid VAT and this amount was also upheld by the high court too.

All over the UK they are saying that this decision by the high court is a landmark one and one that could cost the the revenue system so much more as the claims begin to flood in. So far there are over 1,000 claims waiting to be heard.

It seems crazy but in the UK the tax for bingo is 22% whereas the tax on all other gambling is only 15%.
